The Six Best Jobs for Working At Home

Every day I get email asking me how to find legitimate work-at-home jobs. I have to say this always baffles me because every week I wade through thousands of jobs to find a select few to post in my weekly newsletter. The problem I believe is that people look for the wrong jobs in the wrong places. They often limit themselves to jobs like "typing" or "data entry" that are so rare they might as well give up on the idea of working at home.

My suggestion to them is to find work in areas that are hiring. There are many companies looking for home-based employees to do work that doesn't necessarily require a great deal of experience or education. So why not go after these jobs?

Uganda: Makerere, Not a Market

They can be taught at a much lower cost in single-building community colleges in the suburbs of Kampala or other towns. This will reduce the congestion at Makerere and do away with the space problem, and reduce the cost of running Makerere.

Second, instead of a misleading distinction between government and private students, let us recognise that every student at Makerere is supported from public funds to some degree. But instead of an entrenched minority who rely 100% on public funds, let us have a combination of fees and fellowships whereby all students pay at least some portion of the cost of education as fees.

Third, return to a single university budget in which each unit has a separate vote rather than a separate budget.

Finally, put a limit on the teaching and work load of every staff member, and pay all teaching staff salaries centrally.

The number of property foreclosures soared in southeastern Wisconsin in 2006, as consumers grappled with an icy cold housing market, increased minimum payments for credit cards and rising adjustable rate mortgages. Foreclosures.com, a Sacramento, Calif.-based real estate investment advisory firm and publisher of foreclosure property information, tracks foreclosures in 17 Wisconsin counties. Among them, Milwaukee County's foreclosures increased 51.5 percent to 4,886 in 2006 from 3,225 in 2005. Waukesha County's foreclosures increased 48.8 percent to 558 in 2006 from 375 in 2005, and Racine County's foreclosures grew 21.0 percent to 288 from 238. Foreclosures ripped across the nation's heartland in 2006 in the wake of manufacturing layoffs, the organization reported. The Midwest had 204,656 foreclosure filings in 2006, up more than 70 percent from 120,298 filings in 2005, the report stated.

Faking it for a day

I RECENTLY had a short stint as a simulated patient for a medical college that was conducting exams for its final year students. Although it was somewhat tiring having to present the same set of symptoms to more than 50 students (one after another), the experience taught me a lot about the diagnostic process that comes into play when doctors are confronted with even the simplest of illnesses.

When I first agreed to fake it for a day, I thought I would be allocated a condition with plenty of scope for melodrama. I looked forward to the challenge of perfecting a consumptive cough, or assuming the ashen pallor of someone who was being poisoned, or displaying the vacant expression of someone suffering from amnesia.

As I waited for the details of my condition to be sent to me, I was reminded of heart-wrenching movies with storylines built around the illness and, in some cases, the final demise of one of the main characters movies like Love Story, Shadowlands, and Terms of Endearment.

What to do if you're late on the mortgage

Q . How can I catch up on a mortgage payment? I have fallen behind and have no options, such as extension, refinance, deferral, debt consolidation loan, etc., available to me. Also, apparently, I am not allowed to pay partial payments to catch up the payment. I have a job with available overtime, so I know I can make a little extra money this way, but I am also behind with other bills.

A . You and millions of other Americans are dealing with mortgage problems, and it is no surprise that costly mistakes are being made. Mortgage debt is a different animal from what most of us are used to. I urge all my readers, especially those who are caught with negative amortizing mortgages, payment-option adjustable-rate mortgages, interest-only loans or what are called "exotic mortgages," to read on and take some notes before this animal bites you.

ALONSO FURY OVER CHEAT JIBES

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has reacted angrily to suggestions he cheated in trying to win a penalty in the 3-1 FA Cup third round defeat to Arsenal at Anfield.

The match was goalless when the Spain international knocked the ball past Gilberto only to be caught by the Brazilian's two-footed lunge in the 25th minute.

Alonso's fall was a touch on the theatrical side but there was definite contact. However, referee Steve Bennett, stood just five yards away, booked the Liverpool player for diving.

It proved to be a turning point as Tomas Rosicky scored twice in the last eight minutes of the half and although Dirk Kuyt pulled one back with a 71st-minute header Thierry Henry made the result safe late on.

"I felt the contact, that is for sure," said Alonso.

Late Sammut goal puts Marsaxlokk nine points clear

Marsaxlokk and Msida St Joseph do not belong to the so-called elite core of Maltese football but their remarkable consistency this season has propelled them into the limelight at the expense of a host of so-called traditional clubs.

Facing up to each other, the Premier League pacesetters yesterday produced a keen contest but Marsa-xlokk's superior technical traits in the end proved too much for Msida.

With goalkeeper Omar Borg, rightly voted man of the match, in outstanding form, Msida weathered long spells of pressure but the leaders just refused to settle for a draw.

Brian Talbot kept faith with his attacking game and the side's ascendancy finally translated itself into a winning goal, Kevin Sammut heading home three minutes from time to send the southerners nine points clear at the top of the table.
